LARRY D. THOMAS

Bookworm

For well over a decade,
he's been a Hyde Park regular,
mumbling to passersby,

catching what sleep he can
under makeshift cardboard lean-tos
on lots overgrown with weeds.

When not drunk on cheap beer,
he reads crumpled paperbacks.
Yesterday, an hour or more past nightfall,

I saw him sitting on the sidewalk
in a shadow so black
I almost walked right over him,

his back against a brick storefront.
He sat there for hours with his paperback
cracked, devouring the palpable darkness.
